This short novel by Lawrence was originally called The Escaped Cock. This was Lawrence's preferred title, but he eventually agreed to the alternative for later editions, on the understanding the original was retained as a subtitle. Renowned graphic designer Alan Lustig provides the cover art for this 1950s edition. Like much of his work, it is a graphic representation of Lustig's sense of the author's creative drive.
