This poster features the beautiful 1932 first edition cover design of William Faulkner's dark tale of Southern life. The striking image was composed by graphic designer Arthur Hawkins Jr., a prolific dust-jacket artist who was perhaps best known for his work on James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice. He also provided the illustrations for a a series of cookbooks written by his wife, Nancy Hawkins.
Hawkins' modernist design mirrors Faulkner's use of Christian allegory to depict the stories of birth, redemption as well as issues of alienation, race, sex, class and religion within the American South.
